Interview with Robert Ogilvie
Question 1: Where are you located?
Answer: “I live in San Francisco, California. This is a great city for photography because the light is wonderful and changes so much from day to day and season to season. This means that you can live in the same neighborhood for 20 years, like I have, and see it in a different light, literally, every day.”
Question 2: What is one habit that you notice in all talented photographers?
Answer: “I think that talented photographers all can see beyond the obvious and can frame a scene.”
Question 3: What is it about film that interests you?
Answer: “Shoot exclusively in film and love it for a variety of reasons. I love the variety, the quality of the image and the discipline that having a limited number of exposures at my disposal forces on me. I particularly love expired slide film for the ethereal nature of the images that you sometimes get. I also love the fact that the film cameras that I have - mainly Contax, Leica and Nikon - are as good as they get and that there will never be some software upgrade to render them obsolete.”
Question 4: How has photography influenced your lifestyle?
Answer: “This is a big one and I could answer it many ways, but the simple answer is that photography has slowed me down, made me more observant of the world around me, and has made me more discerning and able to see beauty in what I used to think was the ordinary. Not everything that is ordinary is beautiful, but some of it is and I couldn't see that before.”
Question 5: What is one piece of advice that you can give to a beginner photographer?
Answer: “Spend time looking at photos, really looking at them, and take time developing your style.”
